WASHINGTON, D.C. — Hillsdale in D.C. is co-hosting a show with WMAL radio host Larry O’Connor in celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. The show, titled “Hillsdale on the Hill,” is available on WMAL and the Hillsdale College Podcast Network.
“Much of the argument today about culture, about politics, about who we are, about immigration, you name it — it’s all a debate about America, who are we, and what America means,” Matthew Spalding said in the first episode. “This is a prominent, central debate right now about our political lives, and it’s a perfect time to go back and to recall this history, remember this history, learn it again if we don’t know about it, and as a result, absorb and think about its truths and what the idea is behind it.”
The show explores the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, and American culture. The first six episodes have considered the importance of history in general, the events leading to the American Revolution, George Washington’s preparation for war, France’s role in American independence, and the meaning of citizenship.
“Here at WMAL, we recognize we have a really unique honor of being the news talk radio station of record here in the nation’s capital during this incredible celebration,” O’Connor said in the first episode. “So we really wanted to approach this special occasion with seriousness, with patriotism, and have a yearlong conversation about the importance of this extraordinary time.”
A new 15-minute episode will be released on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month leading up to July 4, the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Episodes air at 8:05 a.m. during the O’Connor & Company show on WMAL Radio in Washington, D.C., and can be accessed on demand through the Hillsdale College Podcast Network at podcast.hillsdale.edu.
